Custom 3D-Printed Hydration Solution for Gus McDonald’s CADEX with Fast TT Cockpit

When triathlete Gus McDonald approached us with a unique request for his CADEX bike paired with the Fast TT cockpit, we knew this project required a tailored approach to meet both performance and hydration needs.
The Challenge: Optimising Aerodynamics and Hydration
Gus wanted a system that would allow him to carry two bottles, positioned in a straight line, adjacent to his chest. The goal was to:
Reduce Airflow Disruption: His TT bars weren't a one-piece design, which left gaps between the bars. These gaps created airflow turbulence, reducing aerodynamic efficiency.
Fill the Space Between the Arms: The solution needed to act as a splitter, deflecting airflow and preventing drag from reaching the chest and stomach cavity.
Increase Hydration Capacity: Gus also needed the ability to carry two bottles instead of the standard single-bottle setup for longer events.
The Solution: A Fully Customisable Dual Bottle Mount
To address Gus’s needs, we designed a highly adjustable dual bottle mount system specifically for his CADEX bike and Fast TT bars.Key Features of the Design:
Dual Bottle Alignment: The bottles are mounted inline to block airflow effectively and minimise drag.
Adjustable Stack Height: The entire mount offers adjustable stack heights, allowing Gus to fine-tune the vertical position of both bottles for his optimal aero position.
Individual Bottle Cage Adjustability: Each bottle cage can be adjusted individually for a perfect fit based on arm and body positioning.
Why Not a Conventional Setup?
Instead of a standard flat bottle setup, we opted to match the angle of Gus’s body and arms for better performance. This design choice allowed the bottles to:
Follow the natural slope of his arm and torso positioning.
Avoid interfering with arm placement, head position, or chin tucking.
Remain secure and stable without affecting comfort or body position.
The Result: Improved Performance and Functionality
This custom dual bottle mount successfully closed the gaps between Gus's bars, limited airflow disruption, and provided increased hydration capacity—all without compromising his aggressive race position.
